On the "blockchain isn't decentralized" thing, technically a #blockchain system is distributed redundant storage of a single database. It's not a decentralized database system. But this kind of subtlety in distinction gets lost easily within hype-laden tech journalism.

By sheer volume of hype, blockchain systems were able to appropriate the word "decentralized".

@SnerkRabbledauber I don't know what he'd say, but I think it fits his thesis pretty well. When both your political factions think "politics" means brandishing children's movies at each other, they have both been nerfed pretty effectively. Their ideologies have become divorced from any actual real-world policy demands. They're just fandom in a different hat.

It reminds me a bit of politics in the Byzantine Empire, to be honest. Obviously, with an all-powerful emperor, political factions could not be allowed to organize around anything important. So instead they organized around which chariot racing team they rooted for. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nika_riots

@jalefkowit i'd clarify that: both are currently needed, but we should aim for zero need for computer literacy

unfortunately i don't think that's realistic (but yes we should try)

3-2-1 backup strategy is:

Three backups, on at least two distinct devices, at least one which is off-site

As more people have their primary backup in the cloud, I’d like to adjust that last one. The spirit is that you should have one copy to hand and one outside your usual work areas. Keep a local copy and a cloud copy if possible; if not, 2 cloud providers can work, but make sure they don’t share common points of failure (eg both backed by AWS or fronted by the same CDN)

Fun Fact: During the Cold War, the Russians built a system called “Perimeter” that was a sort of doomsday device. Once Perimeter was activated, if for any reason the system was unable to communicate with military leadership for 15 straight minutes, it would automatically launch their entire nuclear arsenal at the United States. No human launch authorization would be requested or required.

Perimeter still exists and is still in use today.

@jalefkowit also there are services that enable you to move playlists from spotify to youtube, then you can download the mp3's

This whole thing around shaming people for “supporting ” because they bought a product or service is actually kind of shitty

There’s nothing wrong with the line of thought that goes: if I’m going to spend money on something, I’d prefer to spend it with the least objectionable people. It’s awesome when someone loses business because they behave badly

But shaming or anger directed at people who weigh that differently is controlling and awful. People need things (including art and entertainment!); very often, meeting those needs means dealing with people/orgs they’d rather not.

And this is kind of Taoist but one way to conceptualize work and leisure is... not conceptualize work and leisure. Abandoning the duality of doing/not doing and understanding how it is all a part of *being.* Work isn't this holy endeavor set apart from mere leisure, it's just a process and function of life like growing, eating, shitting or dying. There is no lazy because not doing what we currently call work is just a part of being, too. A rather crucial part, in fact.

I’m still new to using Mastodon regularly. In general, I think the differences between Twitter and here are more cultural than technical. That said, I’ve become convinced that not implementing “quote toots” was the absolute right move, and after digging a little bit deeper I’m gladdened to see that this was intentional: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/309#issuecomment-469260847

okay, cohost, ello and whatnot - but, don't let it sap your wanting to build yourself a personal website.

these platforms are not-anti software, they're anti-other-platforms, they want to be the one platform. So take inspiration from that, and build your own website, use syndication standards if you need, and say fuck platforms.

“You must be informed!” has become something of a cultish article of faith

Yes, there are things about which it is wise to stay informed. It is not necessary to be informed about everything the media wants to report to you. I promise it is ok to have filters and to take breaks. Almost nothing important, aside from true emergencies, requires you to know the moment it happens
