In the days before digital computers, "computers" were human (as @Halpin just noted in a convo with me)

People doing calculations by hand

A large chunk of these human computers were women

Indeed, so *many* were women that ...

"... one contractor of the Applied Mathematics Panel used the term 'kilogirl' to refer to 1,000 hours of female calculation work. Another astronomer spoke of 'girl-years' of work."

I wrote about this for Smithsonian magazine a few years ago: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/history-human-computers-180972202/

“To the extent that people remain active on Twitter, they preserve the viability of Musk’s gambit. The illusory sense of community that still lingers on the platform is one of Musk’s most significant assets. No matter which side prevails, the true victor in any war is the person selling weapons to both sides.”

Okay, but now that this is going semi-viral, a thing I wish Mastodon did have was consolidating notifications in the manner of "X people have liked your post". Right now I'm sitting at 292 boosts and 427 likes in 2 hours, and those are all unique notifications in my notifications tab.

ATTENTION EVERYONE WRINGING THEIR HANDS OVER “#MASTODON ADMINS CAN READ MY DIRECT MESSAGES”: #SysAdmins have *always* been able to read your #email and DMs unless encrypted, including at the big #SocialNetworks and Internet providers. We used to have t-shirts that said, “I READ YOUR EMAIL.”

It’s just hitting now because you got used to places where the admins were kept away in their cubicles and data centers instead of greeting you at the front door.

Meta musings on “you can’t defederate” is coming from

@tw I’ve come to the conclusion that big instances can’t really be moderated - the size just makes it impossible to impose a cultural standard. Big instances might just be an antipattern.

a take re: "admins can see your DMs"

people view the "admins can view your DMs" as some sort of deal-breaker and like, yeah, that's not great but it's hardly the end of the world. there are so many choices for secure communications out there, just take a conversation that's that private elsewhere

I have been using Git a long, long time. I have worked on Git clients and libraries. At some places I've worked, I am the person folks go to when they need Git help.

And yet, only today I learned you can pass -m to commit twice (or more) and it will do the right thing of making each successive message a new paragraph (which is useful for the convention of a short summary as a single first line and following paragraphs as a more detailed message).

Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it, I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) on economics training and the new open access Core textbook:

"How is it possible that a coterie of self-appointed court sorcerers to the world’s governments manage to keep their jobs despite being regularly, predictably, and catastrophically wrong?"

Answer: indoctrination

“Federation, in itself, does not solve community problems.” This is true — technology alone will rarely fix all the problems in a complex sociotechnical system — but changes in technology (necessarily) change these systems, and can do so for the better.

I feel like I’m becoming a broken record, but I think we really need to be extra intentional about what we’re trying to build here. No leaving things unstated based on the assumption that everyone has the same goals and values, we know better now.

For instance, I don’t want “moderation”, I *want* safe spaces. Building these spaces looks like moderation superficially (you kick out the jerks), but keeping the distinction clear in mind is going to result in different actions.

Google have made some changes to their URLs: maps.google.com now redirects to google.com/maps

No big deal you might think, but location tracking is a useful feature for the maps.google.com domain, and you could easily disable it for for other google domains.

Not so easy now.

it's hard to explain to people that software is a fundamentally communal activity because they're like "ohh you're a dev! you must be so smart!" and like. it literally does not matter how smart i am. none of this works at all unless we can collaborate across time and space.
